Is it Safe Yet? Super Chicken Edition.
Now that the FDA and USDA have said those 20 million chickens that ate feed tainted with melamime, cyanuric acid, ammelide and ammeline are safe, I figure we can know who will be selling them.
To that end I've called the people that should know the names of the 38 chicken farms in Indiana.
Here is what I've found as of Friday at 5:30 pm on May 11, 2007
Four processors have claimed that their chickens are not part of the 20 million melamine tainted chickens or are not in the state with the 38 chicken farms.
They are:
I've called the Indiana State Board of Animal Health, because they are handling this aspect of the story. ( link)
I'm asking these questions:
Q. If the 20 million chickens are safe to eat, what are the names of the companies who are selling these chickens to the public?
Indiana State Poultry Association
Purdue University
Again, since the FDA and USDA are saying that the chickens are fine, I don't see why there would be any problem giving me the names of the chicken processors.

They are:
- Perdue Farms (I got an excellent email from Julie DeYoung,Vice President, Corporate Communications at Perdue. It states that all of the protein ingredients are from the United States, their farms aren't effected and they are even going to do random sample testing of their feed ingredients to be proactive. They did this because companies were duped. I applaud their actions. Note to others, THAT is how a smart company communicates and acts.)
- Pilgrims Pride - West Virginia based
- Foster Farms - California based
- Murry's Chickens - New York-based

- If you won't tell us, why not?
- If you don't tell us, does that mean they really aren't safe?
- What about the 3.5 million chickens that when out in February? Who sold those to people?
- What rules are you following regarding disclosure of this information?
- Did you cut a deal with the chicken processor(s) to not name the names?

This is great, Spocko. Thanks for doing this research. Gives us more confidence when home-feeding.
Thanks Maureen. It's funny I remember reading how many people were using chicken for home feeding, but it didn't register until just now just how scary it would be to find you were STILL feeding your cat or dog stuff that could hurt them.
I'll keep updating this list as I find out more.
Thanks for stopping by!
LLAP,
Spocko
Spocko.....what would we do without you? I personally have no desire to eat melachicken nor do I want to feed any to my pooch.....thanks to you, we won't be indulging in melapoultry.
Thanks bunches.
I sent your link to the L.A. Times. Hope they do a story. Had to laugh when I realized I only thought about what I'm home-feeding the dogs and cat, and forgot about the feeling of confidence in what we eat too!
I usually buy Bell and Evans chicken, since it's supposed to be free of hormones, antibiotics, and other stuff I don't want to eat. I wondered if they were affected by the tainted feed.
They have a statement on their home page. Says no melamine in their feed.

The same crap is being done with genetically altered foods, cloned milk and the like.
I am so sick of commercial interests dictating a suppression of information.
Information wants to get out there.
Great info. I am trying to get an answer from Whole Foods regarding the fresh chicken that is labelled "Whole Foods". My Whole Foods store is only selling Belle and Evans whole chickens. The cut up chicken is labelled "Whole Foods". This is what I have been feeding my kittie. If they don't answer soon I will switch to Perdue. Thanks again.
the Foster farms link should be:

well you knew the job was dangerous when you took it, fred.
New reader here, though I've been aware of your previous efforts with the right wing hate speech radio adverts.
Thanks for this info. Looks like I should look around for Perdue. I mostly eat Foster Farms, so that's good too.
Arrrghhh...(at the general state and setup of commercial interests in this country/world)...
